Private Copying
Legal Framework
The 2001/29/EC directive on the harmonisation of certain aspects of copyright and related rights in the information society grants the audiovisual producers exclusive rights which provide him the capacity to authorize or prohibit the reproduction and the communication to the public of the first fixation of his films.
The Exception for Private Copying
According to the 2001/29/EC directive, the reproduction of any medium made by a natural person for private use is an exception to the exclusive right of reproduction granted to the rightholders and to the producers.
That exception is only valid on the condition that rightholders receive a fair compensation.
